Our Ski Specialist Says:

Mount Hood is one of the great mountains located in the Oregon Cascades, and its façade is home to no fewer than three ski resorts. On the Northern side is Cooper Spur, a small resort that caters to families and those looking for quieter retreats. A small terrain park with a half pipe occupies snowboarders, while the even mix of beginner to advanced trails, have skiers in paradise.

The slopes are open from noon to 9pm on Friday, and from 9am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Night skiing is offered on 3 trails during Friday's hours throughout the December to April season. The 4,350 foot summit is serviced by two chairlifts, with one of them only being a rope tow. However, there are almost never any lift lines, so this shouldn't pose any problems. Cooper Spur will close down early, or even decide not to open at all, if there is a lack of snow, so be sure to check snow reports before you go.

Lessons are available throughout the day, and when guests buy a lesson they can expect more than just a standard hour. As instruction goes on all day long, you can get some tips, go and try them out, and then later on come back for more instruction throughout the day. All the instructors roam around the mountain and are very accessible. There are learn-to- ski and snowboard lessons as well as private lessons available.

An all access pass will give guests entrance to the ski mountain, snowtube park, and rentals, and is a great way to save money and ensure you get what you pay for. In addition, there are regular adult, junior, and senior prices for lift tickets sold in day or night time sessions. Rentals are available for both skis and snowboards. The Nordic Center, which includes 6.5km of groomed and tracked cross country and snowshoeing lanes, requires a separate entrance fee and is open from 9am to 4pm. Snow tubing may also be paid for separately.

Feeling hungry? Stop into The Spur Steakhouse for a taste of their legendary steaks and homemade, mouth-watering deserts. Dining hours are Wednesday through Sunday evenings from 430pm to 9pm.

Guests have a wide variety of lodging options available to them, from the hotel rooms in the lodge to various 2 bedroom cabins and one 4 bedroom log cabin. There are fireplaces in all the cabins, and all the lodgings are equipped with a microwave and small refrigerator so that guests can prepare meals on their own if they are so inclined. Guests who stay at Cooper Spur's resort midweek are invited to ski for free at the neighboring Mt. Hood Meadow's ski resort only a short drive down the road. There are also plenty of lodging options located in Hood River, just 23 miles away from Cooper Spur's entrance. Alternatively, you can drive the 90 miles to Portland and be exposed to national chain hotels and motels, and enjoy the nightlife advantages one can expect from a big city.

Don't bypass Cooper Spur for the larger mountains this season. It would be a shame to miss out on the family friendly and intimate skiing that this resort offers its guests. Add in the delicious foods and spacious rooming on site and it's all inclusive, which only makes it more obvious that a winter vacation at Cooper Spur is your logical vacation choice.
