Umpqua National Forest is brimming with nature, from blackberries to steelhead fish, and promises a great adventure for all.
Named for the Umpqua Indians, one of several aboriginal groups who inhabited the Umpqua drainage in the early 19th century, Umpqua National Forest's the fantastic scenery has been shaped by Cascades glaciations, whitewater rapids and volcanic eruptions. Today, the forest is filled with hemlock, true fir, Douglas-fir and cedar and in lower elevations, conifers and hardwoods. It is also home to many species of fish and wildlife.
Nature lovers will enjoy the lush temperate rainforest filled with blackberry bushes, alders, and salmonberry, and hikers can wander through valleys of old-growth ponderosa and groves of oak that separate sentinels like the 9,182-foot Mt. Thielsen and the 8,363-foot Mt. Bailey. The geologically curious can explore volcanic basalt and andesite monolithic spires with names such as Eagle Rock, Rattlesnake Rock and Old Man. And for those looking for water sports, the North Umpqua River boasts whitewater that rafters and kayakers go nuts for. With all this plus waters flowing with steelhead, Umpqua is a natural getaway you won't regret visiting!
