Our Museum Expert Says:

The oldest art museum in the Pacific Northwest, the Portland Art Museum boasts over 40,000 works of American, European, Asian, Native American, and contemporary art. With ever changing permanent collection galleries and endless traveling exhibitions, the PAM will always leave you intrigued and coming back for more.

The Portland Art Museum (PAM) was founded in the last days of 1892, and after its most recent renovations, has become one of the twenty-five largest art museums in the USA. The museum has four floors devoted entirely to modern art, ranging from the unconvential, such as a 4-foot-tall ice bag, to the more mainstream works of artists like Monet and Rodin. One of the more popular parts of the PAM is the Center for Native American Art, which has regional and contemporary art from more than 200 native tribes. There is also a Center for Northwest Art, an area for Modern and Contemporary Art, permanent exhibitions of Asian Art, and an outdoor sculpture garden. There is also a Northwest Film Center, offering a diverse mix of cinematic creations. Young visitors can enjoy hands-on activities, demonstrations and performances while exploring the galleries here. Audio tours are available with the major exhibits, as are a gift shop and small café for grabbing a bite to eat while perusing the collections. And don't forget to check out the live music here after hours!

To get here, just walk to the south corner at the Greyhound depot at the intersection of Irving /6th Avenue, and go left/east one block to 5th Avenue. A Trimet bus stop is located on the corner of Irving/5th and all of the buses at this stop go south through the downtown transit mall toward the Museum. Take the bus approximately 15 blocks south to Main, Madison, or Jefferson and walk three blocks west on any of these streets to reach Park Avenue and the Museum. Get ready to experience Portland in a whole new light—and spend a day immersed in art at the Portland Art Museum!
