Visit the home of the Father of Oregon! The McLoughlin House is filled with pieces of local history and is surrounded by the richness of the Pacific Northwest and the Oregon Trail, making this a fantastic attraction for all. Built by retired Hudson's Bay Company chief factor John McLoughlin, who provided food, seeds, and tools to many new immigrants in need in the 1820s and 30s. The House was known locally as "the house of many beds" due to the hospitality McLoughlin extended to immigrants. Today, the McLoughlin House stands as a reminder of the great contribution Dr. McLoughlin made to the settlement of Oregon Country.
Visitors to the McLoughlin House will see original furnishings and other historical pieces on display—a great glimpse into the life of 19th century settlers. Since the McLoughlin House is also on the Oregon National Historic Trail, part of the National Trail System, there are plenty of scenic, historic, and recreational trails to take advantage of. Visitors will also be able to see the graves of McLoughlin and his wife, Marguerite, next to the house, as well as the home of Dr. Forbes Barclay, a Hudson's Bay Company associate, and his wife Maria. Guests are invited to enjoy a tour, which begins at the Barclay House—admission is free, so make sure you bring the whole family! And don't miss the frequent demonstrations from bonnet-making and beadwork, to embroidery and crochet.
The McLoughlin House is located at 713 Center Street, between 7th and 8th streets, in Oregon City. It is less than four blocks east of U.S. Highway 99E and about nine blocks from I-205 (exit 9). Enjoy being a guest a the house that housed so many—Dr. McLoughlin's home is at your service!
