Flying Between Portland and Seattle
Portland International Airport (PDX) is well served by major US carriers. The one hour flight Flying between Portland and Seattle takes under an hour and costs less than $100. Train from Washington and California to Oregon
Amtrak's daily Coast Starlight serves Portland and Eugene, Oregon with sleeper cars, onboard dining and cars for scenic viewing. The train from Washington originates in Seattle, and arrives in Portland four hour later. The schedule is convenient, but is often late, so check before heading to the train station. Grab a seat on the west side and enjoy the scenic views of the Columbia River gorge and Puget Sound. Amtrak's Cascades route has four daily trains. Priced at about $50 one-way, it may be more economical than driving and certainly cheaper than flying.
The train from California to Oregon is considered one of the most scenic in the country, with coast-hugging views, scenic horseshow bends, and more. Enjoying the scenery and the comfort and space that the train offers, requires changing your frame of reference a bit. The 36 hour train trip from Los Angeles to Seattle or even the 26 hour San Francisco / Oakland to Eugene route takes even longer than most people worst flying experiences.
And, don't book important business meetings around Amtrak's West Coast schedules. Trains are often late and it is not unusual for the train to come to a complete halt to allow a freight train to pass. Stay away from Europeans, Chinese and Japanese on these trains. They will certainly have some comments about how trains should work.
