The USS Bowfin Submarine, nicknamed the "Pearl Harbor Avenger" because of its successful attacks on the Japanese, is now up and running for visitors! The USS Bowfin was part of Battleship Row, a series of ships and submarines docked in Pearl Harbor during WWII. It was launched on December 7, 1942, on the one year anniversary of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. It then went on to sink 44 enemy ships.
The museum at the submarine contains submarine-related artifacts, WWII and submarine history, and shows guests how the 80 person crew onboard survived during the war. There is a mini theater at the museum that shows WWII and submarine related videos, as well as more than 50 episodes of the classic 1960s television series, "The Silent Service." Tours are available of the actual submarine and children and adults of all ages will find the stories and the history that surround the USS Bowfin simply fascinating.
The USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park also serves as a memorial to the 52 American submarines and more than 3,500 submariners lost in WWII.
The USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park is open daily from 8:00am to 5:00pm and is located next to the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center which is just off of H-1 in Waikiki, Hawaii. Admission is about $10, less for active-duty military personnel, seniors, and children.
Enjoy your day paying tribute to lost fighters, learning about submarines, and having a lot fun!
