Fort DeRussy Park is a relatively secluded area in Waikiki, Hawaii, where beauty meets military function and history. It is one of five Fort DeRussy in the country; the others being in Louisiana, Kentucky, and Washington, D.C. Fort DeRussy in Waikiki was built in 1904 and consists of several batteries. The once present cannons have been replaced by anti-aircraft guns. There are also military offices and the hale Koa military hotel on the wide, landscaped greenspace, as well as a museum, the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii, which displays the history of the U.S. Army in the Pacific, including a Japanese tank and some artillery pieces from World War II.
Now that you've entertained your historic side, why not head out to one of Fort DeRussy's pristine, white sandy beaches? With tennis courts, volleyball courts, a grass grilling area, picnic tables, running trails, beautiful blue water lapping up at the shore, and a great view of Diamond Head, what more could you ask for in a day's outing? And to top it all off, Fort DeRussy Park is free, with just a minimal cost for parking! So have fun frolicking, swimming, and exploring the history of Pacific warfare—and who knows? You may even bump into some NFL players who are gearing up for their Fort DeRussy Park annual rookie sand football game!
