Our Museum Expert Says:

The Honolulu Academy of Art is a massive collection of a wide range of artistic pieces, representing numerous cultures and artistic styles. The Academy might be best known for its large collection of Asian art, especially its Japanese and Chinese collections, but hardly limits itself to that one style. The Honolulu Academy of Art also boasts extensive collections of Italian Renaissance paintings, African art, an Oceania collection, assortments of paintings and artistic works from Europe and both Americas, and the James A. Michener Collection of ukiyo-e prints, and a well thought out and informative exhibit of the history and evolution of native Hawaiian art. In all, the collections are housed in a staggering 32 galleries and six courtyards.

Guided tours are available for free, and come highly recommended to fully appreciate what the Academy has to offer. Tours in English run throughout the day on Tuesdays through Sundays, and in Japanese on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Call ahead to arrange a special tour for the hearing impaired. If guided tours are not your thing, an audio guide is available at a minimal cost, and includes 40 exhibits from the Academy's collection of world art.

The Academy is also home to an amazing Pavilion Café, with a delicious luncheon service in a romantic and delightful courtyard setting. Enjoy the Hawaiian breeze as you sample the café's extensive menu of salads, pastas, desserts and wine!

The Honolulu Academy of Arts is located at 900 South Beretania Street in Honolulu.
