Our History Buff Says:

Refresh your memory about Pearl Harbor with a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, dedicated to the 1,177 crewmen who lost their lives aboard the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

First commissioned in October 1916, the USS Arizona saw a long and distinguished career until the morning of December 7, 1941. On that day, the Japanese attack destroyed the USS Arizona and took with her 1,177 of the 1,400 crewmen on board at the time. Since its destruction, the USS Arizona has continued to serve as a military cemetery. The USS Arizona is no longer in commission. As a special tribute to the ship and her lost crew, the USS Arizona Memorial hosts the memorial itself suspended over the remains of the USS Arizona, as well as a land-based a visitor center and a museum dedicated to the American losses incurred by the attack. The entry room of the USS Arizona Memorial contains the nine states for which the eight great battleships and the USS Utah were named. The shrine at the USS Arizona Memorial has the names of all those killed on the USS Arizona inscribed on a marble wall behind velvet ropes. The visitor center has two theaters showing a 23-minute documentary on the Pearl Harbor attack, prior to visiting the USS Arizona Memorial itself. The museum is a vital part of the memorial experience, with hundreds of exhibits showing the honor, courage, and loss experienced on December 7, 1941.

Visitors should be advised that in the summer, there may be up to a three-hour wait for a self-guided tour of the USS Arizona Memorial, which includes a viewing of the documentary and a boat trip over to the memorial itself. After their tour, visitors may find a wide variety of restaurants in nearby downtown Honolulu.

To get to the USS Arizona Memorial, take the #20 or #42 bus straight to the visitor center.
