Our Beach Bum Says:

Waikiki was the original tourist destination for Hawaii, its beautiful white sand beaches were a natural draw. Now it is one of the world's most well-known beaches. World-class surfers and volleyball players congregate here, as do tourists taking their first surfing lesson. All kinds of pleasure craft, from peddle boats on up can be rented. Beachgoers will find shops, facilities and restaurants right off the sand. Today the area is packed with high-rise hotels that account for about half of all visitor accommodations in the state. The local population is about 25,000 and the number of tourists on any given day is about three times that number.

Waikiki is roughly a half mile wide and 1 1/2 miles long, but in that narrow space you will find over 400 restaurants, 300 bars, and an astonishing 30,000 hotel rooms. You can definitely expect to find crowded beaches during the day but it doesn't deter from the sunsets and the stunning scenery of the blue water, white sand and elegant hotels with Diamond Head punctuating the view. When the sun goes down, expect an active nightlife centering around the Waikiki resorts.
