Often missed because of its "hidden" location over the Ko'olau Mountain Range, Kailua Beach is often called the "Best Beach in the World" due to its long stretches of fine, white sand, and aqua-colored water. The beach boasts a protective coral reef which makes for safe and fun swimming in waters that are a consistently perfect 75 degrees.
Most visitors to Kailua usually arrive with body surfing, surfing, and wind-surfing in mind. Kailua Beach is a world-class wind surfing destination and several shops in town offer rental gear and offer lessons. The waters here are also well known for good kayaking, since the water is well protected from large swells, and kayaks can be found here for rent as well. The beach is also great for novice snorkelers, because of the shallow reef. If you like to fly kites, the large park here is great for that too, on windy days.
Amenities available include picnic tables and a pavilion, restrooms and showers, and a concession stand for snack attacks. If you're traveling with kids, beware of the pond in the middle of the park (children should never play here unsupervised) and stay on the lookout for jellyfish between June and September. The 2 parking lots here usually provide enough parking, but no promises if you visit on the weekend or during holidays. When you're finished with your onbeach activities, feel free to head over and check out the shops and restaurants located a short walk from the beach, and cool off with a delicious shaved ice.
