Things to do / Travel Guide
With dozens of coves and bays, Oahu has almost endless snorkeling opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels. There are also many boats that offer at-sea snorkeling. Except for the north shore area in the winter, you can pretty much snorkel all year round.
Snorkeling is a very popular and common activity here, as, on a typical Oahu day, the water is warm and crystal clear, offering excellent opportunities to observe abundant and colorful sea life up close. In many instances, sea creatures will swim right up to you. There is no shortage of places from which to rent or buy the necessary equipment. Listed and described below are many of the more popular spots for snorkeling, along with brief descriptions.
- Hanauma Bay on the south shore is the most popular location for snorkeling and other water activities in Oahu. An ocean-breached volcano cone crater forms this protected environment. It is home to an abundance of sea creatures.
- For an excellent snorkeling spot in the summer that is much less crowded than Hanauma Bay, try Pupukea Beach Park on the north shore.
- Also along the north shore are Shark's Cove (that's just a place name, no real sharks around) and Turtle Bay. These spots are recommended in the summer only, as winter conditions make it unsuitable for snorkeling.
- Lanikai Beach, on the windward side in Kailua, is a great snorkeling spot all year round. The gorgeous setting is much less crowded than either Hanauma Bay or Waikiki and it has been rated as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. If you want to take a break from snorkeling, this is also a great place to swim and sunbathe.
