Things to do / Travel Guide
There are a hundreds of places to eat in the greater Honolulu area. The main types of dishes available in many restaurants usually revolve around seafood, as it is plentifully available. Other common types of food are based on the bounty of local produce, including famous Hawaiian tropical fruits. You can also find a strong presence of specialty ethnic foods, such as authentic Japanese noodle shops and Asian bakeries.
Dining options can range anywhere from budget level to Haute cuisine. In particular, Hawaii Regional Cuisine has created quite a gourmet presence. Hawaii Regional Cuisine utilizes natural ingredients grown on local soil, meat from the state's cattle ranches, and the freshest catches of deep-sea fisherman. The delectable dishes that are produced are the result of blending together the traditions of Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, and Portuguese cooks. Two fine establishments that serve this type of cuisine are the restaurants run by famous chefs Alan Wong and Roy Yamaguchi. These places offer a fantastic, but expensive, dining experience.
For something different and not too expensive, you can try the fare from the many shrimp trucks along the North Shore, or sample famous Hawaiian shaved ice, ice cream (coconut flavor with macadamia nuts is great), and even Hawaiian-style pizza (with pineapple topping).
One of the best places for a reasonably-priced dining experience is in Chinatown. Here there are dozens of restaurants offering not only Chinese food, but cuisine styles from all over Asia. For a more authentic ethnic experience and better prices, look for places that cater to the locals rather than to tourists.
There is also a fairly good selection of health food restaurants in Honolulu and other parts of Oahu, including a handful of some vegetarian establishments.
