Things to do / Travel Guide

Greater Honolulu, on the leeward side of the island, is the only major urban center on Oahu. The vast majority of Oahu's accommodations, restaurants, and entertainment venues are located here, along with the island's tourism and commercial centers. Some of the main areas in Honolulu are:
  • Pearl Harbor - This area contains the famous naval base, including some popular World War II memorials.
  • Downtown - This area is where the Capitol Building, Iolani Palace, Mission House Museum, and other attractions are located.
  • Chinatown - This area features many restaurants, galleries, and shops.
  • The Harbor Area - In addition to being where ships make port, it is also the location of the landmark Aloha Tower.
  • Waikiki - This beachfront area is home to thousands of hotel rooms, scores of restaurants, dozens of entertainment venues, and tons of shopping.
The Koolau Mountain Range separates Honolulu from the windward side of the Oahu. On the windward side lie the communities of Kailua and Kaneohe, which are suburbs of Honolulu. There are beautiful beach parks here that are much less crowded than in Waikiki. As you travel north along the coast, you'll get to Punaluu Town and the Kaliuwaa Sacred Falls.

The North Shore is where the famous surfing beaches are, with tremendous waves crashing into the sand during the winter months. Here you can witness the spectacle and power of the Banzai Pipeline and enjoy Sunset Beach, Haleiwa, and Waimea Bay. Inland from Waimea Bay is Waimea Falls Park.
