There are tens of thousands of hotel rooms available in the Waikiki area alone. They range in quality from the old and simple to the modern and luxurious. In particular, one of the world's largest hotels (with 3,386 rooms), the Hilton Hawaiian Village, is located here. As in all real estate issues, location is what makes the difference here. Since almost the entire Oahu tourist industry centers around Waikiki, you'll likely pay more to stay in this area, especially right on the beach. Some of this higher cost is offset by not having to rent a car while staying within the area. For those budget travelers who would prefer to conserve costs on Oahu hotel rooms, there are also several lower budget alternatives available.
Condo Rentals - Oahu Hotel Alternatives
Other cheaper alternatives to hotels in Oahu are available in the Honolulu area in the form of condo rentals. These are usually better deals than hotels, especially for families and those visitors who want to cook at least some of their own food. As occupancy rates are high, it is important to ensure that you book condos and arrange all details in advance.
Bed and Breakfast (B&B) - Oahu Hotel Alternatives
Outside Honolulu, there are many bed and breakfast (B&B) establishments and inns you can stay in, especially on the windward coast. Not only are the accommodations less expensive here, but the dining is as well. You will, however, probably require a rental car to be based outside the city.
Camping - Oahu Hotel Alternatives
There are about a dozen overnight camping sites on the island. Some are even located along the beachfront. Although the weather is very accommodating and the cost is usually free or nominal, it is not practical to camp out for more than two to three days at a time, as permits are required and as most campsites close for one or two days each week.
