Things to do / Travel Guide
Oahu became the commercial center and the capital of the Hawaiian Islands in the mid-19th century, after King Kamehameha conquered the island and formed the united island kingdom of Hawaii. The presence of American commercial activity, especially in agriculture and shipping, grew steadily. Hawaii became a U.S. territory in the late 19th century. After this, many American companies began operations on Oahu, particularly those in the sugar industry. Many sugar cane plantations and mills were built on the island. The agri-business sector remained dominant until about the 1970s.
The most significant historical event in Oahu was the December 7th, 1941 attack on the still-functioning U.S. Naval Base of Pearl Harbor, which forced the American entry into World War II. Hawaii became the 50th state in the Union in 1959, with the city of Honolulu, on Oahu, its capital.
