Getting Around Honolulu, Waikiki and Oahu, Hawaii

Things to do / Travel Guide

Oahu's transportation infrastructure is very developed. Oahu sports an “interstate” highway system which is up to par with major roads on the U.S. mainland.

Excellent public transportation is available in the greater Honolulu area. The Bus, the aptly-named public mass transit system, can get you to most places for a reasonable fee. The Waikiki Trolley is more tourist-oriented and can take you directly to most of the city's top attractions and sites.

To visit places on the island away from greater Honolulu, it is recommended that you rent a car. The car rental business is very competitive, and, if you shop around, you can often find a bargain. There are also plenty of businesses that rent motorcycles and mopeds. Be advised, however, that gasoline is very expensive. Driving conditions are usually very good on the main highways and roads, but, like any other U.S. city, Honolulu does have typical urban traffic.
