Geography of Honolulu, Waikiki and Oahu, Hawaii

Things to do / Travel Guide

Oahu is one of eight main islands that comprise the U.S. state of Hawaii. The islands are located in the Pacific Ocean, about halfway between California and Japan. Although Oahu is only the third-largest island in area (a little over 600 square miles), the vast majority of the state's population lives there. Oahu features over 100 miles of varied and beautiful coastline, including many world-famous beaches. The island has two volcanic mountain ranges (long dormant), the Waianae and the Koolau.

Oahu is thought of as “paradise” because of two major factors: the spectacular exotic scenery and the fantastic weather. The surrounding water is warm enough to swim in all year long. Although some people think of Hawaii as having a tropical and rainy jungle climate, this is only true for the mountainous parts of Oahu. Most of the island, while lush, has more reasonable amounts of rainfall.
