Things to do / Travel Guide
Both deep-sea fishing and freshwater fishing are available in Oahu. The deep-sea variety is done from special fishing boats. These chartered boats mostly operate out of Kewalo Basin, which is located in Honolulu Harbor next to Fisherman's Wharf. This is a very convenient location for most tourists, and the boat harbor is interesting enough on its own to double as a sightseeing attraction. It is recommended that you take you time to explore the harbor before going out on a fishing trip. For a bonus experience, you can time your harbor visit when the boats are due back in and chat it up with the captains and fishermen. This will also help you in choosing a charter boat for your fishing trip.
The attraction to deep-sea fishing in Oahu is the abundance of big game fish right near the coast, including the king of game fish, the blue marlin. Other varieties include mahi-mahi, yellow fin and skipjack tuna, and wahoo. Summer is the best time of year to catch most of these species, but there is usually decent fishing available almost all year round. Note that, in most cases, the catch is shared between the ship's captain and the passenger.
Freshwater fishing is available on Oahu at the Wahiawa Public Fishing Area, located by the town of Wahiawa in the center of the island. In this very large fishing area you can catch catfish, bass, carp, and sunfish. Please be advised that the authorities regulate the entry and use of this fishing area, so you will need to secure both a fishing license and an entry permit before fishing here. Details about this are available here.
