Biking in Honolulu, Waikiki and Oahu, Hawaii

Things to do / Travel Guide

Biking is a common, year-round activity on Oahu. As such, there are plenty of shops to rent equipment from, especially in the Honolulu-Waikiki area. You can venture off on your own or join one of many groups that ride around the island. A good source for additional biking information is the Hawaii Bicycling League, which holds regularly scheduled riding events. An excellent map of mostly on-road, scenic bike routes is available from Hawaii's Department of Transportation. The map also provides information regarding suggested experience levels for riding on the various routes.

There are many mountain bike trails available, too. It is advised that you consult with a knowledgeable bike shop and the Hawaii Bicycling League before you set off on one of these trails. This is because some trails are easy to get lost on, some cross private property, and many are dangerous in certain places, especially in wet conditions.

Some popular mountain bike trails are listed below along with brief descriptions.

  1. Hauula Loop Trail - An intermediate-level trail, 4 miles long, located on the windward side. The trail can be found off the Kamehameha Highway, north of Sacred Falls.
  2. Kuliouou Ridge Trail - An advanced-level trail, 5 miles long, it is located on the south coast, by Hawaii Kai.
  3. Laie Falls - An intermediate-level trail, 6 miles long, it is located on the windward side by Laie, near the Mormon Temple.
  4. Manana Trail - An intermediate-level trail, 6 miles long, it is located by Pearl City on the south coast, and accessible from Pacific Palisades.
