Things to do / Travel Guide
Unlike the other Hawaiian islands, Oahu has an abundance of nightlife and entertainment. This is particularly true of Waikiki, which has been described as a carnival in the guise of a town. Waikiki Beach is home to dozens of entertainers, tons of shopping, food, and just plain old non-stop action. In addition to its regular entertainment options, the Honolulu-Waikiki area has many special events throughout the year.
In terms of quantity and variety, Waikiki is a top-notch entertainment destination. From the free to the expensive, from the simple to the sophisticated, it's all here.
There are numerous clubs and bars you can visit, offering all types of musical entertainment, including traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music. Another good way to sample some Hawaiian music for free is at the hula shows in the evening at the Kuhio Beach Park hula mound and at the International Market Place. Additionally, the Royal Hawaiian Band gives free concerts most Fridays at noon at the Iolani Palace.
While experiencing a sunset from one of the hotel beaches, you can sample the many acts being offered in outside venues. The hotels attract local as well as international performers, from one-person acts to big productions.
A contemporary act is offered by renowned illusionist John Hirokawa at his Magic Of Polynesia dinner show, also at the Waikiki Beachcomber. The show mixes world-class illusion stunts, including disappearing and reappearing tricks, with Hawaiian-themed music and dance. Mr. Hirokawa is also a very skilled and entertaining escape artist. The magic act is considered a “must see” in Waikiki.
