Most Scenic Drives in Honolulu, Waikiki and Oahu, Hawaii

Things to do / Travel Guide

Since much of Oahu is beautiful and exotic, most highway drives are quite scenic. Listed and described below are a few pleasant routes you can try.

Perhaps the most popular scenic route is between Honolulu and Kahuku on the northern point of the windward coast. This route is about 40 miles long. Leaving Honolulu on Route 61, you drive across the Koolau Mountain Range towards the windward coast. While driving through the middle of the state, you can check out Punchbowl crater. One of the most famous and spectacular view points on Oahu, the Pali lookout, is also along this route. Once on the other side of the Koolau, you can quickly get to beautiful Kailua and Lanikai Beach. Then travel north on Kamehameha Highway along the windward coast. Along the way to Kahuku, you will pass many scenic places and attractions, including many beautiful beaches. Some highlights are Kaneohe Bay, Kualoa Regional Park, Kahana Bay, the Polynesian Cultural Center, Laie point, and the Kahuku Sugar Mill.

Another scenic route option is to drive a full circuit around the southeast coast of Oahu. You cross the Koolau as above, but you go south along Route 61 once you get to the windward coast. This route is about 36 miles long and features the Pali lookout, the Sea Life Park, Makapuu Point, Hanauma Bay, and Koko Head. If you stay on the coastal road into Waikiki, you'll pass right by Diamond Head.
