If your idea of a ski vacation is a calm and relaxing day on the slopes, then Mount Baker is probably not the place for you. Welcome to a freerider's paradise. Steeps chutes, tight tree runs, canyons, and natural half pipes rule the mountain here.
Surrounded by a national park and beautiful rugged mountains, the area's scenery will definitely take your breath away. The large annual snowfall bestowed on this mountain, combined with its extreme terrain, allows for a challenging day on the hill. The resort's location northern exposed location in northwest Washington State near the Canadian border, allows for a longer ski season, with the season often lasting late into the spring. The mountain's pre-determined official season runs from November until April.
Mount Baker is a mountain like no other. Its 38 trails are composed of mostly challenging trails, with a wide variety of steeps, chutes, and canyons to keep your adrenaline pumping the whole way down. If you're lucky enough to know a local then this is definitely the best way to discover the mountain. Its secluded side-country is an adventure for those capable and experienced enough to give it a try. Make sure to take an avalanche beacon, shovel, probe, and as mentioned a local and experienced partner. The mountain's trails are serviced by 10 runs which can run into long lines on the weekends. One may be better off trying to make it up for a visit during the week. The mountain is open weekdays from 9:00 and weekends from 9:30am, remaining open all days until 4:00pm.
Mount Baker has a reputation as one of the nation's top snowboarding areas. You'll find a terrain park, as well as both a Superpipe and half-pipe, for all your snowboarding requirements. The terrain park is full of kind hits, round hips, and silky-smooth landings.
For an off the mountain adventure, make sure to try out the locally available snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing. To-date, Mount Baker-Snoqualmie has 119 miles of cross-country ski trails.
When visiting Mount Baker, remember that this mountain targets the local population and therefore has little resort culture. Expect a nice drive to any lodging or restaurants. Once you hit the road though, lodging and with it dining, abound.
