Peruse galleries filled with Asian, Native American, African, Oceanic, and pre-Columbian art. With 23,000 diverse pieces, the Seattle Art Museum spans time and cultures, promising a delightful art-filled day for visitors from all walks of life.
The Seattle Art Museum building is of a unique vertical design connecting the life inside to the street life outside where the Hammering Man, a steel sculpture, waits to greet visitors. Popular works at the SAM include the anonymous 14th-century Buddhist masterwork, "Monk at the Moment of Enlightenment" and Jackson Pollock's "Sea Change." The museum boasts a large 18th-century collection, a smaller 19th-century exhibition and a fantastic room devoted totally to Northwest contemporary art. Lectures and workshops are always available at the SAM and the entrance ticket includes a free visit to the Seattle Asian Art Museum, if used within a week of purchase. Should you get hungry while here, Taste, the new restaurant at the SAM, offers simple and reasonably priced foods created with sustainable, market-fresh ingredients.
To get here, heading North take I-5 to Seneca Street exit, turn west on Seneca to First Avenue and then turn right (north). If heading South, take the I-5 to the Union Street exit, then west (toward Puget Sound) on Union Street to First Avenue. The museum is one block south. From I-90: Heading west, merge onto I-5 North and take the Madison Street exit. Turn left on Madison and then take a right onto First Avenue.
