Our Botanical Gardens Expert Says:
What better way to learn about and enjoy the great outdoors than to walk in a 230 acre arboretum among 4,600 varieties of plants? You'll find sanctuary at the Washington Park Arboretum in Seattle, Washington, beside blooming trees, a populated marshland, and at the tranquil shores of Lake Washington!
The Washington Park Arboretum provides guests of all ages and backgrounds an opportunity to explore the beautiful grounds, lakes, and flowers of the area. Sixty or ninety minute free tours show visitors the ins and outs of the arboretum, like the Foster Island Ecology tour, which brings guests to the shores of the Foster and Marsh Islands to see the native blue herons, turtles, and beavers. Spring is the season of choice at the Washington Park Arboretum. Take the Spring Seasonal tour and breathe in the warm area mixed with the scents of cherry blossoms, dogwoods, and magnolias. In the winter the hummingbirds take over; in the summer, the hydrangeas and sorrel trees unleash their majestic bloom and enticing scents; and in the fall the Japanese Maples, Mountain Ash, and Walnut trees change color and paint the Washington landscape with gorgeous shades of oranges, reds, and yellows. Birdwatchers will also feel right at home with ample bird watching opportunities year round.
Adult, youth, and family programs are available all year, including a summer camp for kids and seminars for adults on horticulture and landscaping. Guests are also encouraged to visit the Elisabeth C. Miller Library, the Otis Hyde Herbarium, and the Graham Visitor's Center for additional information and educational resources.
