Things to do / Travel Guide
Northwest Washington and the Cascades is known for being one of the rainiest areas in the United States. Indeed, there's always the chance it will rain, even in the middle of the summer. On the other hand, the official rainy season only lasts for about half the year, meaning that, on the whole, the weather is rather pleasant from May-October.
The coastal areas of this region experience relatively mild weather all year round due to both the warm Japan current to the west and the mountains to the east, which prevent harsher weather conditions. Winter is extremely cloudy, wet, and rainy, with strong Pacific storms. At higher elevations, the rain turns into snow, making for excellent skiing conditions in December and January. Spring is full of wet, stormy days, but, towards the end, the weather warms up and the amount of precipitation decreases substantially. Temperatures are moderate to warm along the coast in the summers, with sunny, dry days and cooler nights farther inland. The pleasant weather extends until the beginning of fall, but, as the season progresses, the weather takes a turn for the worse, with the clouds and rain returning.
