Public Recreational Parks in Seattle, Tacoma, Washington Cascades

Things to do / Travel Guide

Seattle

Gas Works Park, near Lake Union, and Green Lake Park, near Green Lake, are among the best-loved open green spaces within Seattle. Popular places to go swimming, windsurfing, and to engage in outdoor recreational activities like jogging, playing football, and Frisbee, stopping at either of these parks makes for a great way for you and your family to take a break while hopping from one attraction to another within the city.

Tacoma

One of the most famous parks in Tacoma is Point Defiance Park. The park covers nearly 700 acres with gardens, forests, footpaths, and picnic areas that all jut out into Puget Sound. Port Defiance Park is home to Owen Beach which is great fun for families to visit during the summer. Your kids are also sure to enjoy one of the biggest and best zoos on the West Coast, the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, which houses a plethora of different critters and creatures.

Olympic Peninsula

Located on the northeastern tip of the Olympic Peninsula is the Olympic Game Park in Sequim. This park is great for families and children who want to get a closer look at large animals held in captivity (which resembles their natural surroundings). Along the region's Pacific Ocean coastline, you can visit one of the many tide pools that can fascinate children for hours, with colorful starfish and tiny sea urchins making their homes in the waters there.

Pacific Coast

Another fun activity to take the kids along for in the spring and summer months is whale watching, aboard a replica of the tall ship “Lady Washington.” This ship, stationed in Aberdeen, in Grays Harbor since 1989, was used as a model for the ships that appeared in Disney's animated flick “Treasure Planet,” as well as in the mega-hit “Pirates of the Caribbean” series. Back in her heyday, the Lady Washington was one of the first American ships to sail from the Pacific Northwest to the Orient. When aboard whale watching, sometimes the kids will “see” whales, even if it's not the migrating season.
