Things to do / Travel Guide
Seattle Fun Facts
- Seattle has figured prominently in some very well-known film and television ventures, such as “Twin Peaks” (which was filmed in the towns of North Bend and Snoqualmie), “Frasier,” “Grey's Anatomy,” “Sleepless in Seattle,” “Disclosure,” “Ten Things I Hate About You,” and “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.”
- You can see one of the homes belonging to Microsoft founder Bill Gates (the one that is built underground in the side of a sloping bank), from a boat out on the waters of Puget Sound, near Bellevue. There are probably very good reasons why Bill Gates has built a giant, state-of-the-art, electronically-controlled house built underground when you own waterfront property along the Puget Sound.
Interesting Facts about Washington State
- No other state in the United States is named after a U.S. president.
- There are more glaciers in Washington than in all the other 47 contiguous states put together.
- Washington is the home of soft serve ice cream (at one of the Dairy Queen in Olympia).
- Washington has the lowest percentage of religious people compared to any other state.
- Washington is home to the longest floating bridge in the world. The Governor Albert D. Rosellini Bridge, located at Evergreen Point, connects Seattle and Medina, and crosses Lake Washington—and is a great site to visit!
Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens Facts
- Mount Rainier is the highest point in Washington and was, interestingly enough, named after a British soldier (Peter Rainier), who fought against America in the Revolutionary War.
- In the Mount St. Helens blast of May 18, 1980 the top 1300 feet of the mountain disappeared within minutes!
- Heaven on earth! After the blast the north slope of Mount St. Helens had been reduced to look very similar to the surface of the moon.
- The volcano of Mount St. Helens actually erupted because there was a 5.1 earthquake underneath it that triggered it.
