Enjoy some of the best fishing in the West and fantastically rugged wilderness across two states. From snowmobiling to educational walks, Ashley National Forest has plenty of choices for endless outdoor fun.
Established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908, Ashley National Forest consists of 1,384,132 acres in both Utah and Wyoming. The Forest's most exciting attractions are probably the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, which offers some of the best fishing in the West and well over 100 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails, Flaming Gorge-Uintas National Scenic Byway, and the Green River Corridor, a world-class blue ribbon fishery with everything from kayaks and canoes to personal watercraft, ski and fishing boats, pontoons and gigantic houseboats. The High Uintas Wilderness contains Utah's highest peak and is home to bighorn sheep, elk, moose, mule deer, eagles, osprey, owls and beaver.
Visitors to Ashley National Forest can also enjoy over 1,000 miles of trails with access to backcountry and wilderness areas that are great for hiking, biking, horseback riding and even cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Also enjoyable is an educational walk on the 1/2 mile Dry Fork Canyon Nature Trail. Should you wish to plan an extended stay, yurts are available to rent about 4-7 miles from the Flaming Gorge - Uintas Scenic Byway, and there are hundreds of camping and picnic sites. Several access routes into the forest just north of Cedar City are available from both I15 and US 89.
