Utah Getaway Planner
This region was favored, at various times in history, by dinosaurs, ancestral Indians, Mormon pioneers, and the International Olympic Committee. Follow in their tracks (literally in the case of the dinosaurs) by exploring Salt Lake City, skiing, hiking, and camping in the thickly-wooded snow-capped mountains. This is a region blessed with natural beauty and is a great place for an active vacation.
Utah Tourist Attractions
In the United States, Utah is known as the faraway land of national and state parks. Hiking enthusiasts from all over the country flock to Utah's popular and vast national parks. Because of the southwestern terrain—part desert and part snowy mountains—the parks are unique, varied, and filled to the brim with visitors all year round.
While the most popular of Utah's parks are located in the southern part of the state, the northern portion definitely has its fair share. There are a few parks just outside Salt Lake City, perfect for day or weekend excursions if you're staying in the city, and then others as you drive out from the city in any given direction—however, driving west will land you in the Great Salt Lake, so you should probably choose another direction. Not to be missed: Wasatch Mountain State Park, Timpanogos Cave National Monument, and Antelope Islands State Park.
You'll also find ample ski opportunities in and around Salt Lake City and Ogden. Some of the best skiing in the country is located in Northern Utah, so if that's the name of your game, make sure you schedule plenty of slope time in your itinerary.
Salt Lake City Tourist Attractions
While hiking and skiing work to attract tourists to the State of Utah, culture, religion, and history work to draw visitors in to great city of Salt Lake City. The culture, religion, and history of interest in the area relates to the founding and flourishing of the Mormon people and the Church of Latter-Day Saints. Mormon pioneers lived in Salt Lake City in the 1800s and today you can visit Temple Square, as well as a number of other cultural, religious, and historical site that track the history of what was soon to become a rather large religion in the United States. Sites you'll encounter along your religious journey include the LDS Family History Library, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and many houses of worship and historic compounds.
Other tourist attractions, moving away from religious tourism, include zoos, amusement parks, spas, golf courses, and, a biggie in the region, rock climbing walls. You'll find a handful of rock gyms in some small towns up by the Idaho border, and then even more as you travel down to Ogden and Salt Lake City.
Salt Lake City Vacation Spots
Is it possible that we've gotten to this point in the article and barely mentioned the lure of the Great Salt Lake? Salt Lake City is ideally situated on the shores of the Great Salt Lake. When the weather is nice, people flock to the state's beloved lake for picnics, swimming, and lazing around in the sun. Antelope Island is a popular Utah vacation spot, as it's a bit more hidden and tucked away than the busy urban shores of Salt Lake City.
There are two other popular vacation spots in Northern Utah, other than the dense ski areas: Park City and Sundance. Park City is known as a family resort town that offers exciting ski terrain in the winter in addition to loads of warm-weather activities as well, including hiking, mountain biking, and shopping.
You'll recognize the name Sundance from the festival named for this calm and beautiful little town. The festival actually takes place in Park City, but the Sundance air is still alive with the perfect combination of the arts and the beautiful outdoors. Sundance is located in Provo Canyon at the base of Mount Timpanogos, a 12,000 foot mountain.
Salt Lake City, Utah Road Trip Getaway Planner
Salt Lake City is located close to most of the area's attractions, so you should use it as a base. Grab a good map of Utah and hit the road. Decide how many days you want to ski or hike and then add two more for sightseeing. A popular family getaway is spending a week or two crossing the Rockies on a Salt Lake City to Denver road trip.
