Northern Utah ranges in scenery from the beautiful but nearly barren Great Salt Lake to skiing and resort-filled Park City, and varies in culture from the unique Salt Lake City to the haven of Sundance. In a diverse region such as this one, you're bound to find some great spots for a romantic getaway, no matter what you happen to be seeking. Let's take a closer look at what you might find.
Romantic Accommodations and Activities in Northern Utah
Many people see Salt Lake City as a culturally-rich city with plenty of things for lovers to do and places to explore. The 10 acres of Historic Temple Square contain architectural masterpieces such as the Salt Lake Temple and the Salt Lake Tabernacle. In the middle of the Great Salt Lake is Antelope Island, an Eden amidst an Armageddon, with gigantic mountains looming up out of the sea.
In walking distance to Temple Square is the Inn on the Hill, where each of the rooms bears a different motif having to do with Utah's natural wonders. One room is named after the Wasatch Mountain Range, another after Canyonland. The furniture is of polished dark wood, the slate or marble bathrooms have Jacuzzis, and the view from the second floor is of the Wasatch Range. And for late-risers, continental breakfast is served until noon.
Now for a complete change of scenery, travel into the Wasatch Range and arrive in the ski resort spread throughout Park City. If the scene in Salt Lake City is traditional, the scene near Snowbird or in Park City is of vacation and getaways. This is one of the country's best ski resort towns, and with all the skiing opportunities and après ski, it happens to be very attractive to those looking for romance.
There are actually three ski resorts in Park City, plus a number of bars and clubs such as the Lounge, Wasatch Brew Pub, and Adolph's. The first is a center for après ski, at the second you can watch them making the beer you're drinking, while at the last you can serenade your partner to the sound of the piano playing behind you. Some of these establishments are located within the resorts themselves, while others are within the downtown area of Park City. The city is quite nice to walk around in, even in the wintertime. If you're there for the Sundance Film Festival, all the better! Find a nice low-key romantic movie or a drama, settle down, and enjoy.
As for where to stay, if you two lovebirds want a quiet bed and breakfast amidst all the happy bustle of Park City, there's only one place, and it's a good one. The Washington School Inn, with its understated rugged look, is the perfect place to come back to after a long day on the slopes -order in a masseuse for some deserved getaway pampering. A subtle Asian theme pervades the rooms, each of which overlooks the mountains or the outdoor scene through an oversized schoolhouse window.
To the south of Salt Lake City is Sundance, a rustic wonderland where you and your significant other can rent a cottage or a cottage suite and enjoy skiing in the wintertime, and horseback riding, hiking, and biking in the summer. There are artistry workshops of all kinds for you learn new crafts or just have creative fun. It might be rustic, but you're surrounded by environmentally-safe modern amenities to make your stay as carefree and enjoyable as possible.
Romantic Dining in Northern Utah
Just take a stroll down to Park City's Main Street for an excellent selection of romantic restaurants. The Riverhorse on Main is a standard-bearer of excellence in a casual atmosphere. Industrial-looking on the outside, rustic and romantic on the inside, it's an excellent place for a celebratory meal - like your anniversary or honeymoon, maybe. Settle down to an onion soup for two with fresh thyme, move on to a red trout from Utah's rivers or a macadamia-crusted Alaskan Halibut. Accompany your meal with selections from the California-filled wine list, featuring highlights from the 1990s and 2000s. Dessert is a no-brainer, with dishes like Death by Chocolate or the hot-berry cobbler. You also might catch some great live musical entertainment if you're lucky.
Another romantic evening out dining can be had at Adolph's Restaurant, a Park City mainstay. Now this is really rustic looking, set in a log cabin, with a copper-topped bar. It's actually a swank meeting place, where a number of skiing stars stop for a cold one. Adolph himself is a European emigrant, and the menu is full of Swiss and German dishes from which to select. For example, it's an excellent place for cheese fondue, rack of lamb, or chateaubriand. And for dessert - apple strudel and hot cider.
