Ski-in/ski-out access lodges and vacation rentals are easy to come by, giving you the luxury of skiing right out your door. If you want to save a few bucks and stay a little further out than just a snowball's throw from the action, many northern Utah hotels and ski lodges offer free shuttles to the lifts and slopes.

Hotels in Northern Utah

Predictably, Salt Lake City is the hotel hub for northern Utah. You will find everything from the well-known national chain hotels offering a mid-range stay, starting at around $150, to restored historic and luxurious hotels and boutique hotels with impressive lobbies and equally noteworthy nightly rates, beginning at around $200, during peak winter and summer seasons. Prices generally come down a bit during off-seasons times. The greatest cluster of both chain and restored, historic hotels is in downtown Salt Lake City - you can find both hotel types near the Gateway Center, Historic Temple Square, and other downtown tourist sites. Salt Lake City hotels also generally offer airport shuttles, and many include amenities such as complimentary breakfast and Internet access. The Peery Hotel, built in 1910 during the mining boom, is one of Salt Lake City's most elegant and famous historic boutique hotels. On the National Register of Historic Places, the well-known European hotel architect Charles B. Onderdonk designed this small yet classic hotel, with its stately lobby and dramatic grand staircase.

You can also count on finding a wide range of hotels in Park City.
Generally clustered around the historic downtown area, you will find mid-range and exclusive luxury hotels in Park City, many of which offer free shuttles to the ski runs and ski lifts. Nightly rates at elegant hotels in Park City start at around $200 during peak winter and summer seasons.

Ski Lodges and Resorts in Northern Utah

Alta, Park City, Snowbird, The Canyons, and Deer Valley are home to some of the region's most swanky ski lodges, spa resorts, and hotels. Lodges with ski-in/ski-out access to the slopes are located in all of these locations, and nearly every lodge that does not offer this option offers a free or reduced-rate shuttle to the ski lifts and ski resorts. The largest cluster of ski resorts and lodges are in and around Park City, where you will find a selection of accommodations ranging from the down-to-earth and basic to the exclusive and chic. Rooms and suites (many of which feature spectacular views, full-service spas, oversize whirlpool baths, deck hot tubs, and steam showers) and lodges offer free or reduced-price ski shuttles. The price tags on these gorgeous gems begin around $300 per night. The Red Moose Lodge is the only ski lodge near Snowbasin and Powder Mountain, in Ogden Valley. Red Moose Lodge is a more down-to-earth, family kind of a place; prices at the Red Moose Lodge start at around $110 a night.

Historic Inns and B&Bs in Northern Utah

You will find a bounty of historic inns and bed and breakfast establishments (B&Bs) in northern Utah as well as a wide range of amenities and accommodations spanning from the basic to the pampered and luxurious. Restored historic homes and estates offering overnight stays with breakfast are located in Brighton, Eden, Huntsville, Logan, Midway, Park City, Providence, Provo, and Salt Lake City (both downtown and off of I-80). Lower-end inns and B&Bs can start at around $60 per night, mid-range accommodations of this type begin at around $100, and luxurious historic lodgings generally start at about twice as expensive. During the peak winter ski season, you can expect to add to these prices.

Luxury Apartments, Cottages, and Vacation Rentals in Northern Utah

Vacation rental apartments, villas, town homes, ski in/ski out condominiums, and standard ski condos in northern Utah are available near Salt Lake City at the Alta, Brighton, Snowbird, and Solitude resorts and near Park City at The Canyons, Deer Valley, and Park City Mountain Resort. A three-bedroom furnished house (equipped with a fully-functional kitchen and linens) starts at around $400 per night during the spring and summer and starts at around $600 a night during the peak winter months.

If you want to really live Robert Redford's reality, you may want to rent one of the Sundance Cottages at the Sundance Resort. One- to three-bedroom rustic cottages set amidst aspen groves, magnificent, mountain scenery, and near the sound of rushing mountain streams, or two- to five-bedroom mountain homes for larger families. A three-bedroom mountain home generally starts at around $1,000 per night during the peak winter and summer seasons; during the holiday season (December 22nd-January 2nd), the price jumps to about $1,500. In the low season from the end of March through early June, the price falls to about $675 per night. An added bonus of staying at a Sundance cottage is the on-site Sundance Channel featuring award-winning films previously featured at the Sundance Festival.

Motels in Northern Utah

Make a move toward one of northern Utah's motels if you are interested in inexpensive clean, standard lodgings. Most towns, including Ogden, Logan, Park City, Tremonton, and Salt Lake City (both downtown and near the airport), have budget motels (both mom-and-pop style as well as national chains). Driving along U.S. Highway 89 you can certainly find yourself a pleasant place to shack up. If you are looking for an inexpensive motel near Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, your best bet is in Vernal, Manila or Dutch John. Motels generally start at $50 per night and are slightly costlier the closer you get to Salt Lake City.

Youth Hostels in Northern Utah

Hustle on over to a hostel for basic, budget lodging. Salt Lake City offers four youth hostel options: the Utah International Hostel on South 800 West Street, the Avenues Hostel on F Street, the International UTE Hostel on E. Kelsey Avenue, and the Camelot Hostel on West 800 South. Avenues Hostel offers a large number of metal-frame bunk beds as well as two kitchens open for use. The International UTE Hostel has 10 dorm-style beds and several private rooms (which cost more). By far the cheapest option in Salt Lake City is the Camelot Hostel, at about $10 a night. There's also the Chateau Aprés Lodge, located a stone's throw from Park City Mountain Resort Lifts, which offers dorm-style rooms with or without continental breakfasts, usually starting at around $35 per night.

Camping in Northern Utah

Camping is common throughout northern Utah and campgrounds are ubiquitous. Fees usually range from $5-$20 and nearly all campsites have toilets, grills, and potable drinking water, and modern amenities like warm water showers and electricity are also usually available. You can find beautiful campsites at Bear Lake State Park near the Idaho-Utah border, as well as many campsites on the outskirts of Ogden, Logan, Park City, and Provo. The campgrounds near Mantua Reservoir are a good choice if you want to be near Brigham City, and for camping near Salt Lake City try the grounds at Big Cottonwood Canyon, Little Cottonwood Canyon, and East Canyon State Park. To sleep close to the Great Salt Lake you will find camping sites at Willard Bay and Antelope Island State Park. In and around the towns of Manila and Duchesne you will find campsites with breathtaking views of the Uinta Mountains. Light your campfire at Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area where you can count on 14 different campgrounds with a range of vistas and amenities.
