Things to do / Travel Guide
Tour Salt Lake City in a horse-drawn carriage, take the track of the world's greatest Olympians as you tour the 2002 Winter Olympic venues, take to the back roads in a rugged, open-air, all-terrain vehicle (ATV), or pleasantly ply the Great Salt Lake as the sun sets over the glassy, serene horizon. Quiet and calm, or rambunctious and rugged, northern Utah tours are as enjoyable as they come.
Great Salt Lake Boat Tours
Bob along the buoyant waters of the sprawling saline Great Salt Lake as you take a narrated, scenic, educational, sunset, or dining tour. Tours of the lake and Antelope Island are available year-round. You can learn about the wildlife and geological phenomena connected to the area, as well as enjoy the lake's splendid scenery. The tours generally leave from Great Salt Lake Marina and can last anywhere from an hour to around three hours.
Salt Lake City Tours
If you would like a cushy, narrated, and informative drive around Salt Lake City, one of the city's bus tour companies can certainly help you out. With trips to Temple Square, the Tabernacle, Kearns Mansion, and the Capitol Building, as well as many 2002 Winter Olympic Games sporting event sites, these tours are an excellent way to get a taste of the town. Tours can be short, two-hour excursions or full-day adventures. If you'd rather sightsee in the city with a bit more style, take a horse-drawn carriage, available year-round from Historic Temple Square after 6 p.m. Mormon missionaries offer free, guided walking tours of Historic Temple Square (in more than 30 languages) every day of the week except Sundays, leaving from the flagpole at the center of the plaza every few minutes.
2002 Winter Olympics Tours
See athletes in training and the stomping grounds that hosted some of the world's most renowned winter sports stars at Utah Olympic Park near Park City. Guided tours of the 2002 Winter Olympic venues leave every hour from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., seven days a week, year-round. Salt Lake City bus tour companies offer narrated tours that stop at many of the Olympic venues in Ogden, Park City, Snowbasin Ski Resort, Salt Lake City, Kearns, and Provo, among others.
Northern Utah All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Tours
For an exciting back roads ride, climb onto the seat of a four-wheel-drive (4WD) ATV for a guided tour of the Wasatch Mountain Range. Available at Snowbird Resort, you will strap on a helmet and get fitted for a tractor-like, open-air, motorized, 4WD vehicle for a two-hour tour of the area's wildflowers, waterfalls, forests, and alpine vistas. ATV tours are also available at Bear River Lodge near the Utah-Wyoming border, where you can take an exciting excursion into the lush forests of the Uinta Mountains to spot deer, elk, moose, and bear. Drive alongside high mountain streams and sidle up to aspens and junipers; at both Snowbird Resort and Bear River Lodge these tours are available from July-October. As the tours are very popular, it is best to reserve ahead of time.
Northern Utah Nature Tours
Want to learn about the birds and the bees in northern Utah? Various nature tours are available throughout the region. To get knee-deep in beautiful blossoms, Norwegian School of Nature Life in Park City offers a wide variety of guided wildflower walks through the hills of the Wasatch Mountain Range. Walks can range in length anywhere from half-day to full-day hikes (with varying distances and difficulties) and are an excellent way to learn about the local foliage. Tours to see the flight-bound abound; birders should flock to Salt Lake City, Provo, and Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge to find a wide range of guided tours to northern Utah's most bustling bird watching locations. Nature tours are usually available from the spring through early fall.
