Things to do / Travel Guide
Whatever means you use to arrive to northern Utah, getting to the region is almost as easy as clicking your heels together three times.
By Plane
One of the easiest ways to get to the northern Utah region is to fly directly into the heart of it all at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). Most major airlines fly into the city and direct service is available from many U.S. and Canadian cities; Delta Airlines alone offers non-stop flights from over 100 cities. In 2005 the airport was ranked #1 in the United States for on-time departures and #2 for on-time arrivals. Vernal is home to Vernal Airport, (VEL) the one regional airport to which you may take a connecting in-state flight from Salt Lake City International. Flying to Vernal (via Salt Lake City only) will allow you to save a couple of hours driving time if you plan on visiting Dinosaur National Monument, Flaming Gorge Reservoir, and Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.
Ground transportation from Salt Lake City International is easy and convenient. Rental cars are easy to come by and taxis, limousines, and door-to-door shuttle services are ubiquitous. You will have no trouble finding a shuttle to just about any ski resort or town in the greater Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Shuttles and van services leave many times during the day, year-round, to Sundance, Snowbird, Alta, The Canyons, Deer Valley, and other resort areas, as well as to the towns of Sandy, Draper, Bountiful, Ogden, Logan, Park City, Cottonwood Canyon, Heber City, and Tooele, among others.
The Utah Transit Authority buses also offer service from the airport to downtown Salt Lake City seven days a week, at regularly scheduled intervals from around 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Running just as frequently, the TRAX light rail service can also shuttle you from the airport to downtown Salt Lake City, and many communities of Salt Lake Valley.
By Car
Running a jagged, roughly east-west course through the middle of the northern Utah region, I-80 passes from Cheyenne through the Wyoming-Utah border, runs through Coalville and continues on into Salt Lake City. I-80 then jogs around Great Salt Lake and continues due west into Nevada, eventually hitting Reno. Traveling a north-south trajectory through the region is I-15, which enters northern Utah from southwestern Idaho. I-15 then passes through Tremonton, Brigham City, Ogden, Salt Lake City, and Orem, and then around Utah Lake to Provo, continuing on through Payson, Nephi, and points further south and west, like Las Vegas and southern California. Another major north-south highway is I-84, which enters the northern Utah region from south-central Idaho, overlapping with I-15 through Tremonton, Brigham City, and Ogden, and then forking to connect Layton and Henefer. I-15 traces part of the Echo Reservoir and then merges with I-80.
