For Olympic skiing on the east coast, there's only one destination: Whiteface Mountain. In addition to playing host to the 1980 winter games, the mountain also boasts a vertical drop of 3430 feet - the most of any ski area in the east. Entering the 2007-08 season, SKI Magazine readers ranked Whiteface/Lake Placid as one of the top three best ski destinations in eastern North America. Much of the acclaim comes as a result of the fabulous off-hill Olympic-style activities like ski jumping, bobsled, and luge rides that complement the skiiing and snowboarding offerings. The same SKI Magazine survey ranks Whiteface as fourth in challenge, third in scenery, and sixth in overall satisfaction. Perhaps most importantly of all, Whiteface ranked third in its apres ski, so be sure to get in early to catch a good seat by the bar.
