In 1836, Martin Van Buren was elected as the eighth American president and the first to have been born under the American flag. In 1839, Van Buren purchased the estate that would later become the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site, and named it Lindenwald. He remained in Lindenwald until his death in 1862. In 1961, the National Park Service established the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site.
