Public Recreational Parks in Lake Placid, Lake George and Northern New York

Things to do / Travel Guide

Beyond the expanse of the Adirondacks, visitors to the northern New York region can find other public recreational parks as well, many of them nice spots for picnicking, relaxing by the water, or spending time with the family.

Public Recreational Parks in Saratoga Springs

Congress Park in Saratoga Springs is located across the street from the local visitor center and borders the southern edge of downtown. Founded in the early 1800s as a small private garden, Congress Park is a nice retreat from the town of Saratoga, and has expanded to include rolling green lawns, walkways, duck ponds, statues, lots of flowers and plants, and two historic springs. It is open daily from dawn until dusk, with tours given during the summer.

High Rock Park is located along Maple Avenue in Saratoga Springs, a narrow park with a grassy area just at the base of a cliff, a scenic point great for picnics and playing. From May-October a Farmer's Market is located on the grounds of High Rock Park as well.

Public Recreational Parks around Lake George

Both Roger's Memorial Park and Veteran's Park in Bolton Landing offer small public beaches along the shores of Lake George, great spots for family picnicking, with playgrounds on site too. Both parks, but especially Roger's, are host to various parades, concerts, and festivals, particularly during the warmer months of the year, many catered towards kids and families. Most of these events are free to the public as well. Check the Bolton Landing Chamber of Commerce for a schedule of events.

Shepherd Park in Lake George Village also includes a small beach on the edge of Lake George, where easy swimming and sandcastle building are nice along the quiet shore. Shepherd Park is located at Canada and Malcolm Streets and hosts free outdoor concerts and fireworks displays every week during the summer. Shepherd Park is also home to craft fairs and festivals during the spring, summer, and early fall.

Public Recreational Parks around the Thousand Islands

The Robert Moses State Park - Thousand Islands and Campground is located partly on the mainland and partly on Barnhart Island in the Thousand Islands area, north of the village of Massena. Home to a variety of flora and fauna, Robert Moses State Park - Thousand Islands includes a swimming beach, picnic areas, a playground, a bathhouse, boat rentals, tennis courts, a year-round nature center, and a 168-site campground, offering many recreational opportunities for the entire family. Robert Moses State Park - Thousand Islands also offers spectacular views of the St. Lawrence River, with its many trails winding through forests, fields, and wetlands.

For the history and military buff, Greenbelt Riverfront Park is located in Ogdensburg in the Thousand Islands area. Greenbelt Riverfront Park runs along the St. Lawrence River and displays many historical plaques commemorating the Battle of Ogdensburg during the War of 1812. Greenbelt Riverfront Park is just a few blocks from the Frederick Remington Art Museum, one of the largest draws to the Ogdensburg area. Open daily, this park also features a deep-water marina and launching ramp, as well as picnic areas, barbeque pits, and tennis courts.
