Geography of Lake Placid, Lake George and Northern New York

Things to do / Travel Guide

Northern New York encompasses a vast area of natural wonders and beauty, best known for its mountains and lakes - including the highest peaks in New York state and a wealth of shoreline. The northern New York region outlines just beyond the “green area” of the entirety of the Adirondack Park and Forest Preserve, a State Park that covers 6 million acres or one-third of New York State. The region is located in the northeast part of New York State, south and east of Canada, west of Vermont, north of the Catskills, and east of Lake Ontario.

Northern New York extends south of Adirondack Park to include Saratoga Springs. Along the western edge of the Adirondack Park, the region includes the St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands, marking the border between the United States and Canada. Lake Champlain, on the eastern edge of the Adirondacks marks the border between New York and Vermont. Lake George is south of Lake Champlain.

Northern New York itself does not have any major metropolitan areas within its boundaries, but is located relatively close to Montreal, Syracuse, Albany, Burlington, Vermont. Other large cities within a days drive include New York City, Rochester, Toronto, Ottawa, and Boston.
