Northern New York is an outdoor adventurer's playground, excellent to visit almost any time of year. With so many natural wonders and local companies catering towards these splendors, it is no wonder visitors to northern New York will find so many cool and different things to do throughout the region. Beyond water sports on its many waters and winter sports during its snowy months, here are suggestions for fun ways to explore, experience, and get to know northern New York.

Gondola Skyrides in Northern New York

Take a ride on the gondola from the base of Gore Mountain to the summit of Bear Mountain, 3,200 feet up. Along the way and at the top, visitors are treated to a sweeping view of the High Peaks and Southern Adirondacks. After taking in the summit, you can return to the base on foot or take the gondola back down. The gondola operates on weekends from late-July to early-October; and Gore Mountain is located on Peaceful Valley Road in the town of North Creek.

Houseboat Rentals in Northern New York

Get a true feel for the water by renting a houseboat, which has become popular in the Thousand Islands area. Many operations are based on the Canadian side, while Remar Houseboat Rental in Clayton is still around in New York. Instruction is provided and no previous experience is required, but reservations must be made well in advance. You can rent a houseboat for as short as a weekend or as long as a couple weeks. A houseboat is a perfect choice for nature-lovers, with outdoor and water activities docked literally right at your doorstep.

Llama Trek through the Adirondacks

Llama Trek tours venture around the High Peaks of the Adirondacks. Trips range from half-day to full-day and are offered for individuals and groups around the diverse terrain. Meals are usually included in tours leaving out of Westport.


Gambling at the Saratoga Race Course

A highlight of northern New York is the world-renowned Saratoga Racetrack, which has been open to horseracing and betting lovers since the 1860s. The race track has attracted wealthy and famous visitors and helped shape the region. Racing season is during six weeks period in the summer (generally around July-September). Visit the historical site, place a bet if you want to, and if you get there early enough in the morning you can watch the horses exercising before they race.

The High Falls Gorge is a beautiful natural attraction located along the Ausable River. Both guided and self-guided tours can be taken through the three waterfalls and impressive granite cliffs. In the winter, don't miss the unique ice formations that carve themselves out in around 700 feet of frozen waterfalls. Snowshoeing is a popular activity along the one-mile trail, with equipment available for rent on-site. On weekends and holidays, visitors enjoy campfires and roasted marshmallows.
