Things to do / Travel Guide
Not far from the remoteness that is northern New York, Schenectady stands out as being the home of the single behind-the-scenes tour of note in the region. Originally built as a vaudeville house, you can now take a free tour of Proctor's Theatre, a historic, beautifully-restored theater listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Take a behind-the-scenes look at the stage that used to grace the likes of George Burns, Red Skelton, Tony Bennett, and Robert Goulet.
Behind-the-scenes and factory tours are typically family-friendly activities good for a short and interesting diversion from a region's mainstream tourist activities. Some tours have irregular hours and admission restrictions. Tours of the Proctor Theatre, for instance, are only available once a month and by advance reservation. Click on the factory tour icon for more practical information.
