From activities that take tourists high above in the sky, to journeys right on land, daredevils will find plenty of opportunities to satisfy their risk-taking desires.
All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Adventures in Northern New York
ATV trail riding has become a popular outdoor activity in northern New York, the three- to six-wheel vehicles zipping their drivers over both land and water. St. Lawrence County, in the northwest portion of the region, in particular has many trails and town roads that are ATV accessible, marked with ATV signs. Local sport companies and lodgings around northern New York rent ATVs throughout the year, especially during the summer, and direct you on your way.
Bobsledding in Northern New York
The Olympic Sports Complex at Mt. Van Hoevenberg off State Road 73 in Lake Placid was the site of the Olympic bobsled and luge events. The bobsled run is almost a mile long and includes 16 curves. Passenger rides are given on the bobsleds year-round, and start at $30 per person. Passengers ride with both a professional driver and brakeman down the 1980 Olympic bobsled track. Cool!
Hot Air Ballooning Adventures in Northern New York
With so much natural splendor in northern New York, taking a hot air balloon ride is a fantastic and unique way to escape and enjoy it all, floating high above on gentle air currents. Hot air balloon rides offer spectacular views of the Adirondacks and many waterways of northern New York, as well as the Green Mountains of Vermont. Balloon rides can cost around $200 per person or more, depending on the number of people in your group. Many companies even include a complimentary champagne toast while you're in the air! Many companies are based just outside the region, in places like Schenectady and Plattsburgh, and fly in circular routes overhead.
Scenic Charter Flights
Charter a small plane and soar over the mountains, treetops, and shimmering waters of northern New York. Adirondack Flying Service, based on Airport Road in Lake Placid, takes visitors on scenic flights over the magnificent peaks of the Adirondacks any time of year. Departing from Lake Placid Airport, a 20-minute flight can cost around $25 per person, with family discounts sometimes available.
With so many bodies of water in northern New York, it's only fitting that visitors can also charter flights that take off and land on the water. Helms Aero Service is a seaplane base situated on State Road 30 in Long Lake, northeast of Old Forge, and Payne's Air Service is another seaplane base located on Seventh Lake just north of Inlet, New York.
