Our Zoo and Aquarium Expert Says:
The park contains an aquarium and a botanical garden. The aquarium tour begins with a short film which follows the course of the Rio Grande from its origin to the Gulf Coast. Hermit crabs and starfish then await you in the touch pool. Walk through an arched aquarium to a 285,000-gallon shark tank holding 15 to 20 sand-tiger, brown, and nurse sharks, as well as other fish. The botanical garden is split into two parts. One part contains desert plants, the other includes species from Mediterranean climates.
Open 9 am to 5 pm. $$ (Moderately Priced)
Statistics: Approximately 250 species of animals on 87 acres.
From Albuquerque Biological Park - New Mexico:
The Albuquerque Aquarium takes visitors on a journey down the Rio Grande from Albuquerque to its mouth in the Gulf of Mexico. Fresh water riverine, estuarine, surf zone, shallow waters, coral reefs, open ocean and deep ocean species are represented along the way. Other highlights include an eel tunnel, seahorses, luminous jellies and a 285,000 gallon ocean tank where brown, sandtiger, blacktip and nurse sharks swim alongside brilliantly colored reef fish, eels, sea turtles and open ocean species.
