Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:
The Taos Pueblo has been continuously inhabited for almost 1000 years, and is now home to approximately 150 Native Americans living without modern amenities like running water and electricity. Built of adobe – a mix of earth, water and straw - this style has inspired architecture throughout the Southwest. Artisans at Taos Pueblo sell traditional works made from clay, leather, wood and stone as well as paintings, sculpture and jewelry.
Just a half a mile east of Highway 68 and 2 miles north of Taos Plaza stand 2 multi-story adobe structures. These two pueblos are separated by the Rio Pueblo De Taos which flows from the sacred Blue Lake. The structures were probably built between 1000 and 1450 A.D. and have been declared a World Heritage Site.
Pueblo residents will take you on guided walking tours and in the summer months there are festivals, such as Corn Dances and pow wows, that the general public is invited to join. Taos Pueblo is open daily from 8am to 4:30 pm, except for a 10 week period in February – April, when it is closed. Make sure to call ahead, because there are closings for tribal events throughout the year.
