Old Town Albuquerque is a must see for travelers in New Mexico. Though a bit touristy, Old Town Albuquerque does not sacrifice any of its charm. It's a laid back area where you can stroll and browse for hours and hours!
The old town of Albuquerque was established in 1706, and has since been a cornerstone of community and commerce. The area is filled with historic homes and churches (pop into the Rose Garden at San Felipe de Neri Church), as well as modern shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Old Town Albuquerque is a place where history meets modernity, where old meets new. You'll have the opportunity to explore native art and jewelry at fantastic prices, or head into a boutique, where you'll likely spend a bit more money. You'll encounter Pueblos and Navajos selling their handicrafts, and cafes and restaurants galore! Make sure you drop by the Old Town Information & Visitors Center at the Plaza Don Luis (at 303 Romero) to pick up maps and get more information about the area. Also at the plaza, you'll see replicas of two Civil War cannons—Confederate troops hid the cannons in Old Town when retreating during a skirmish in 1862.
Old Town Albuquerque seems to have no limits, and when you decide to visit the area, you'll have many cultural and recreational options at your fingertips, like the Turquoise Museum, the Albuquerque Museum of Art, History and Science, the American International Rattlesnake Museum, Albuquerque Aquarium, the Biological Park, the Rio Grande Zoo, and the Rio Grande Botanical Gardens. There are also various tours available of Old Town, including historic walking tours at 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, and 4:00pm Friday through Wednesday, and ghost tours every night at 8:00pm.
Have fun exploring this gem of Spanish American and Native American history!
