Our Museum Expert Says:

Museum lovers used to museums like the Louvre, the Met or even the Smithsonian will find this hidden gem in a remote area of New Mexico to be a very different and refreshing experience. The word "museum" does not quite describe the Ghost Ranch Living Museum, which includes landscapes featured in Georgia O'Keeffe's work. That is not surprising since, she lived at Ghost Ranch and her ashes were scattered there. Before we describe the Ghost Ranch Museum (actually several museums), a bit about the place. Ghost Ranch is on 21,000 acres of New Mexico wilderness land – you may even recognize it as a movie location. The place is owned and run by the Presbyterian Church, as a place of education, a retreat and as a community to better serve God. If that is what you are interested, you will not find a better location. Spend a few days at the Mesa Housing, enjoy the local hikes and the courses.

Travellers planning a shorter stay, of even a few hours will find the Ghost Ranch an interesting place to stop and visit one of several diverse museums on the property. Interested in dinosaurs? You came to the right place. The Museum of Paleontology is on the site of a quarry that produced some excellent finds from the Triassic era. If all you know about Paleontology comes from Dr. Ross Geller, then watch people work on extracting more dinosaur fossils from the quarry.

For something 220 million years more current, check out the art, crafts and cultural attractions of the Museum of Anthropology. Yet another attraction are the tours of the Georgia O'Keeffe sites around Ghost Ranch.
