In the most heavily visited areas, Albuquerque, Taos, and Santa Fe, the lodging possibilities are positively mind-boggling. Summer is the top tourist season in the region and you should expect prices to rise significantly during this time, except around the ski resorts, where the winter is typically the most expensive season of the year.

Throughout the region, hotels are quite inexpensive, compared to the national average. Look out for higher prices in prime areas like Santa Fe and Albuquerque. If you're in search of more expensive lodging, luxury hotel chains can be found in the region. For a unique lodging experience stay at the historic and highly rated La Fonda Inn in Santa Fe Plaza, a local landmark for more than eight decades. Most of these establishments are smaller, family-owned operations with a great focus on service and guest satisfaction. Typically, prices at these establishments start out at around $100 a night, but could set you back as much as $250. At the pricier establishments spas are often on the grounds and are available for use by visitors. Also, breakfast is usually included (as the name implies) and many of these establishments feature top-notch dining, often with a focus on the regional cuisine. Taos and Santa Fe are the best bets for this type of lodging, with well over a dozen highly-rated B&Bs in each city.

Comfortable, air-conditioned, and affordable, motels are plentiful throughout the region and are a great way to save some money and get a comfortable room for the night. The most affordable motels are typically located along the main interstates of the region, and can at times be almost as affordable as hostels. Your best bet is to focus on the nationally recognized chains, as you can expect a certain standard of quality and reliability, all at a reasonable price.

While youth hostels still haven't made big inroads in the American Southwest, some do exist in areas of the region more popular with tourists. Hostels can be found (in limited numbers) in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos. Prices usually hover between $15-$20 a night per person.

The region's campsites are for the most part well maintained and safe, and a great way to save on expenses. Most campsites are full service, with showers and electrical hook-ups and can be quite comfortable. Campsites range in price from as little as $5 a night (typically without full-service facilities) to around $15 a night. Many of these campsites also offer cabins at a higher price.
