Getting to Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos, Northern NM, Southern CO

Things to do / Travel Guide

By Plane

The only major airport in the region is in Albuquerque (ABQ). Santa Fe (SAF) receives some commuter airlines and other small cities have local airports, but if you're coming in on a commercial flight, Albuquerque is probably your best bet.

By Car

It can't be stressed enough, a private automobile is essential for any independent traveler who wants to enjoy the region at any great depth. Even if, like Bugs Bunny, you take a wrong turn in Albuquerque, you'll still be happy that you took the car all the way out there. The region is in a relatively isolated spot of the United States, far from the coasts or any of the country's largest cities.
  • The nearest big city is El Paso, Texas, 280 miles south of Albuquerque on Interstate 25.
  • Denver, Colorado is 450 miles north of Albuquerque on Interstate 25.
  • The biggest city in the Southwest, Phoenix, Arizona, is 475 miles west of Albuquerque on Interstate 40.

By Bus or Train

Greyhound national bus routes run to the major cities in the region and inner-city bus lines are pretty reliable and extensive in Albuquerque, as well as Santa Fe, although less so. Amtrak offers its only daily train service through the area along the “Southwest Chief” route, which begins in Chicago and continues all the way to Los Angeles. The route enters the region from the east through Raton, it then continues in a southwestern direction passing through Las Vegas, New Mexico, on its way to Albuquerque.
