Public transportation does actually exist in this region, but is really only reliable or widespread in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. For all intents and purposes, a car is essential for getting around the region, especially in any real capacity. Most outdoor attractions are not serviced by public transportation and unless you're taking organized tour buses everywhere, a car is indispensable.
Bus companies, like Greyhound, provide service throughout the region, but this method is only recommended for getting from town to town not to explore the region in depth.
Major interstates crisscross this region, and like all of the American Southwest, long, wide-open highways make covering long distances a breeze.
