The Rio Grande River and its tributaries provide ample opportunities for boating either in fast or slow moving river waters, or in the man-made reservoirs built on these waterways. In any case, natural beauty and easily accessible outfitters are a given. Be aware that this region tends to be BYOB (Bring Your Own Boat); meaning boat rentals are very hard to come by.
Boating in the Santa Cruz Lake Recreation Area

About 50 miles north of Albuquerque, the man-made Cochiti Lake is a no-wake lake with a boat ramp, campgrounds, and showers on both sides - if you feel like staying overnight, or at least having a picnic after a long day on the water. The main activities in the popular spring to fall months are sailing, wind surfing, and swimming.
