Our Ski Specialist Says:

Discovery is located right in the heart of southwestern Montana, right inside of a National Forest. Discovery skiing covers two distinct bowls, and has some of the steepest lift serviced skiing in the northwest. A huge advantage of skiing at Discovery is that it remains one of the few undiscovered areas with affordable pricing and fantastic snow.

Discovery is not only blessed with snow, it also has a respectable vertical drop of 1,670 feet. Its 614 skiable acres are all located within the grounds of the National Forest. There are 63 runs serviced by 6 lifts. The front side of the mountain offers fantastic beginner and intermediate runs, while the back side has the more advanced runs. The terrain varies, and features tree skiing, powder bowls, mogul fields, and groomed trails, so skiers and riders of every level and interest can find their little, or not so little, corner here.

Discovery is open daily from 9:30am to 4:00pm, with discounts for students on "College Days." Make sure to check their website for specific discount dates. For a change of scenery, check out the cross country trails available. Additional nearby activities include dog sledding, and snowmobiling. Nearby Anaconda has a few interesting sights, and some beautiful scenic drives dot the map.

For a pick-me-up, after a long day on the slopes, head to the Discovery lodge for some tasty cuisines. The cafeteria serves both hot and cold meals, and you can find a bar next door for mid-day refreshments. On weekends and holidays there is an outdoor grill open on the deck. For an evening bite, check out Anaconda, where you'll most likely be sleeping, for family style restaurants, cafes, and other night time fare.

Discovery is a ski area but not a resort, so there are no slope side lodgings here and the few amenities on the mountain are to be found mainly at the lodge. It is in a relatively remote location, and so lodging will have to be found in the nearby towns, particularly Anaconda. This town, as well as Missoula (90 miles away) and Butte (50 miles away), all provide a variety of small lodging options such as B&Bs, motels, and inns. Make sure to book in advance.
